Halloween Party

Students enjoyed getting dressed up.
The second grade boys dressed in my class while the girls dressed in the other classroom.
After dressing student identified their costume characters. Sushi, pirates, witches, princesses, Star Wars warriors filled our classroom.

What a crew!
Students walked through the school and around the playground on a lovely warm day.
Chaotic fun!
Students had cupcakes, fruit, vegetables, dip, chips, a drink, and an ice cream cup. While they ate I read them a scary folk tale. I had told them another version of this tale Tailey Poo in the morning. We compared the versions. Students enjoyed the party very much. Thank you parents.

Spaceball, Citizenship, and Autumn Craft

Second graders learned about government, taxes, Congress, the Supreme Court, symbols, and monuments of the United States. The vocabulary and concepts are difficult but they are beginning to understand the checks and balances of our system of government. They continued to work on word problems focusing on two step problems. Students enjoyed Ronald Morgan and thinking and writing about team work. They truly enjoyed reading the poem Spaceball.

Parent volunteers prepared an autumn craft. The students enjoyed making it after music on Thursday. The parents provided all the materials and had everything prepared and ready to go. We all enjoyed the craft. We discovered that the amount of air in the bag determined how the leaves fell off the trees.
Students discovered that they could stand their craft on their desks.
Table 2 showing off their crafts.
Table 25, they named themselves after I kept mixing up Table 1 and 3, sharing their work.
Thanks so much to our parent volunteers!

Tara and Tiree - Coping with Emergencies

This week students enjoyed a story about two dogs rescuing their owner from drowning in a frozen lake.  They enjoyed learning about rescue dogs and other service animals. We also read our health chapter, entitled Staying Safe. Students discussed ways to stay safe and respond to emergencies. Second graders are beginning to learn how to study new information. We practice with the short nonfiction article, Rescue Dogs. Students read it silently, participated in reading it orally, made a graphic organizer with material from the story and then shared information with their learning group.

Explorer Project and The Strongest One

Student enjoyed an explorer project. First they looked at a series of books about famous places in the Unites State and around the world. Then they chose some places they would like to explore. I wrote the names of the first six randomly suggested and then students chose which place they wanted to learn about.

Then we went to the computer lab where they sat close to the students with the same topic. They went to Grolier's online encyclopedia searched for their place and began to write down things to do and see. While they did that I went to each student and they picked out a picture to be printed for their poster.
The next time we went to the computer lab students completed an online search of their place finding more things to do and see.

Their writing assignment was to write a travel journal entry about what they would do and see at their place.  Finally, they worked with their group to produce a poster about their place and then report back to the class. Hopefully, they learned about using an online encyclopedia, searching online, working with others, and printing pictures from online.
